[09:02:57] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[09:02:57] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[09:02:59] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> that's what happens if fixing a bug is faster than checking out the git repo of the linux kernel.
[09:03:03] -!- deep42thought has joined #archlinux32
[09:03:04] <buildmaster> Hi deep42thought!
[09:03:04] <buildmaster> !rq deep42thought
[09:03:05] <phrik> buildmaster: <deep42thought> arch32 is on the bleeding edge of arch, which is on the bleeding edge of software?
[09:03:11] <abaumann> hi deep42thought
[09:03:18] <deep42thought> Hi abaumann
[09:03:22] <abaumann> first :-)
[09:03:27] <deep42thought> :'-(
[09:03:30] <abaumann> lol
[09:03:31] <deep42thought> ;-)
[09:03:54] <abaumann> I changed the stats page on the buildmaster a little bit to see stats per architecture..
[09:04:11] <deep42thought> also on archweb32's index.php?
[09:04:19] <abaumann> nope. just the index.html
[09:04:41] <abaumann> the statistics.php already had an arch param, thanks to you :-)
[09:04:46] <deep42thought> :-D
[09:05:36] <deep42thought> maybe we should redirect the index just to packages.archlinux32.org/buildmaster/index.php and solve the code-duplication by using php $_GET?
[09:06:38] <abaumann> yeah. I was anyway puzzled, as I missed the index.html in a git repo..
[09:06:57] <deep42thought> hmm?
[09:07:12] <deep42thought> packages/index.php is the index
[09:07:19] <abaumann> /srv/http is not a git repo on the buildmaster, so where do these files come from?
[09:07:20] <deep42thought> for packages.archlinux32.org
[09:07:33] <deep42thought> and buildmaster/index.php for buildmaster.archlinux32.org
[09:07:38] <deep42thought> ummm
[09:07:43] <deep42thought> _that_ you mean
[09:07:50] <deep42thought> they're hand-crafted
[09:07:53] <deep42thought> not version-controlled
[09:07:55] <abaumann> thought so :-)
[09:08:09] <deep42thought> they used to reside in the buildmaster repository under website
[09:08:14] <abaumann> ah.
[09:08:17] <deep42thought> and /srv/http had a symlink to that
[09:08:29] <abaumann> no problem. they should get borged. :-)
[09:08:41] <deep42thought> borged?
[09:08:54] <abaumann> fancy term for backuped using borg.
[09:09:08] <deep42thought> ah, :-D

[09:10:31] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: thanks for testing firefox.. I have never encountered this gkrust error
[09:11:06] <abaumann> xbps-src is the void version of makepkg, right?

[14:40:21] <deep42thought> abaumann: any reason, why you're using httpd on the buildmaster (and not nginx)?

[15:30:38] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[15:30:38] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[15:30:39] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> YASMSBOP: yet another silly make system based on python
[15:31:40] <abaumann> deep42thought: Apache was around when I started to set up web servers, there was no nginx. I also don't like the business behaviour of the nginx people. And I just know better how to configure Apache.. :-)
[15:32:22] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: yeah, you might need some disk space. And preferably an SSD.. :-)
[15:35:30] <thePiGrepper> the latter I have. the former, hmm, I need to move some things, lol. I missed this black friday.. I wanted to but a couple 4TB HDDs and a 1TB SSD for my PC
[15:36:05] <abaumann> I was building on a 100 GB cloud space, so that should suffice..
[15:37:32] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: abaumann hehe, yeah that should it ;) btw, what are the specs of the build systems?
[15:37:56] <abaumann> You mean those in https://packages.archlinux32.org
[15:37:58] <phrik> Title: Arch Linux 32 - List of Build Slaves (at packages.archlinux32.org)
[15:38:48] <abaumann> eurobuild3: is a Intel Core 2, 2 GHz, nlopc46-i486bs0 is a virtual machine emulating a 486 and 512 MB RAM.
[15:41:45] <abaumann> the rest I don't know really :-)
[15:53:24] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: right, those. I was wondering the other day about that. Because I usually use Digital Oceans VPSs for several things. and lately Ive been working on some scripts to do everything programatically from a central VPS. for example, if I want to test a new kernel on my netbook, but Im away from home, instead of waiting to compile on my workstation, I use this script, that connects to my
[15:54:30] <thePiGrepper> main VPS and tells it to create a new VPS with the required specs to compile the kernel in less than an hour(server time is priced by the hour), it sets everything up, copies the required kernel version from my central VPS, the needed patches and config(which I can send from my netbook), and starts compiling. after compilation, it 'installs everything into a folder which is compresses and sent
[15:54:30] <thePiGrepper> back to my main server. from which I can download later. it's quite convenient when Im not at home.
[15:54:30] <thePiGrepper> I dont remember why I started talking about this . nvm :)
[15:54:54] <thePiGrepper> oh right, the VPSs. it would be interesting to programatically create build servers for certain troublesome packages which require more resources/time
[15:55:13] <thePiGrepper> and then kill them until they are needed again
[15:55:24] <thePiGrepper> to optimize build time and reduce overall costs
[15:56:03] <abaumann> yeah. I was thinking in a similar direction. If you have a look at https://buildmaster.archlinux32.org then you might think, we have a big backlog of jobs.
[15:56:19] <abaumann> But then having a look at i486 and i686 separately, this seems not to be the case.
[15:56:44] <abaumann> If i686 slaves are over and over building the same package, then this mainly because they have nothing else to do
[15:57:06] <abaumann> i686 has 300 "to-be-build'" packages.
[15:57:30] -!- guys has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[15:57:33] <abaumann> If the line plateaous, then there is usually a dependency or a blocking package, which needs fixing first.
[15:57:43] <abaumann> So, I don't think we have too little build power..
[15:58:21] <abaumann> ..this says: more build slaves means we can run more experimental builds and have a faster catchup game eventually, if a lot of packages change upstreams (I'm looking at you, Haskell).
[15:59:01] <abaumann> i486 is a different story.. there are just too many packages requiring fixes or funny bootstrapping, so this is a resource problem in terms of human brains and limited amount of hands.
[16:08:15] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: I see. well if, at least with i686, the build power is more than enough, then it'd be even more beneficial to see how one can maybe dynamically create a 'beast' machine to deal with the firefoxes of the world quickly and then go away, until there's a new version/package for it. also, it would be interesting(I actually dont know if you already do this though, maybe you do) to have like
[16:08:22] <thePiGrepper> a graph of dependencies in the buildmaster, so when glibc(for example) gets rebuild, _everything starts getting rebuilt, and if there were packages on staging that were going to testing in the same day, stop that or something.
[16:08:37] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: regarding i486, are there too many issues of that kind?
[16:08:55] <thePiGrepper> wouldnt looking at debian i386 packages help with that a little?
[16:30:29] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: there is a graph, but just for instance for glibc, it doesn't make sense to rebuild everything, as the library is backwards compatible and even supports more than one ABI.
[16:30:40] <abaumann> I DO look at Gentoo, Fedora, Debian for patches. :-)
[16:31:20] <abaumann> But there is one important difference: they always had a i486/i586 version of their distribution. Archlinux was always requiring at least something around i686ish or so.
[16:31:31] <abaumann> So some packages like rust are simply missing on i486.
[16:31:56] <abaumann> For Java I had to take some really old binaries in order to bootstrap Java with itself.

[17:11:30] -!- MrBIOS has joined #archlinux32
[17:12:20] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: hmm, I see. it was your initiative to do the i486 build,, right? may I ask why did you want to it? what was your motivation?
[17:14:13] <abaumann> initially I just wanted to see, whether a modern Linux can actually work on a vintage i486. :-)
[17:14:45] <abaumann> Then we realized, that it might be good to have a version around, which doesn't use any fancy Intel stuff, so it can run on VIA or AMD CPUs too.
[17:15:10] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: I ask because Ive been having similar intentions to build several packages for Atom-based systems, the old 32-bit ones up to cedar which is one of the first 64bit ones. basically build most C-based programs optimizing to 'native' and see what's the highest amount of performance one can pull with this. ofc, that's something which might be easier to do with gentoo probably, but I really
[17:15:16] <thePiGrepper> like pacman so, yeah.
[17:15:26] <abaumann> another thing which bothered me is bootstrapping: can you build an Archlinux from nothing but from another distro..
[17:16:05] <abaumann> We also thought about that to make a pentium3 brand or so, which optimizes the hell out of all packages.
[17:16:38] <thePiGrepper> aba'nothing but from another distro' meaning what exactly?
[17:16:59] <abaumann> for instance: cross-compile Archlinux to RISC-V
[17:17:12] <abaumann> as oaken-source has done (thanks again).
[17:17:31] <abaumann> you could just set some fancy flags in /etc/makepkg.conf and then rebuild all the packages.
[17:17:50] <MrBIOS> abaumann: are you still interested in an OLPC?
[17:17:54] <MrBIOS> I realized I never sent ont
[17:17:55] <MrBIOS> one
[17:18:03] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: I see. interesting, I didnt know there already was Archlinux for Risc-V
[17:18:06] <thePiGrepper> nice
[17:18:08] <abaumann> Hi MrBIOS. Yes, I'm still interested. :-)
[17:18:25] <abaumann> technically speaking it's a Parabola for RISC-V
[17:18:39] <MrBIOS> okay, I’ll get you one sent, address still the same? BTW, as of kernel 4.20, there are several fixes for various things in mainline.
[17:18:44] <MrBIOS> specific to OLPC
[17:18:53] <abaumann> yes, the address is still the same.
[17:19:36] <abaumann> I sincerly hope, customs is not thinking, this is a bomb or something along those lines and destroy it on the spot..
[17:19:48] <abaumann> *destroys
[17:20:46] <abaumann> deep42thought: I added the buildmaster via NRPE to my nagios monitoring.. just in case you see funny firewall rules and an nrpe daemon running on the buildmaster :-)
[17:22:51] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: https://github.com
[17:22:52] <phrik> Title: GitHub - oaken-source/parabola-riscv64-bootstrap (at github.com)
[17:23:23] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: another interesting thing Ive been wanting to try is arch+musl. Im not totally sold performance-wise, but I think it would align with other interests of this and similar projects
[17:25:25] <abaumann> You could go directly with Alpine..
[17:26:43] <thePiGrepper> abaumann: hm, I might. I might even go to void, they have musl for x64. but I really like pacman and the whole PKGBUILD format.
[17:27:11] <MrBIOS> abaumann: heh, your customs sucks that much?
[17:27:37] <abaumann> I hope not. :-)
[17:28:00] <abaumann> But I had some strange encounters like: "this is a battery, this is dangerous and could explode. So we cannot give it to you."
[17:28:01] <MrBIOS> doesn’t sound like you have much faith
[17:28:08] <MrBIOS> I can send you one without a battery
[17:28:21] <MrBIOS> it works fine with 12VDC, center positive
[17:28:35] <abaumann> Are there any with good batteries left? I thought, all batteries of that age are pretty much dead.
[17:28:44] <MrBIOS> nah, they all work to varying degrees
[17:28:46] <abaumann> but, right, I don't need a battery..
[17:28:56] <abaumann> ..OTOH. It should work.
[17:29:04] <abaumann> the customs, I think.
[17:29:15] <abaumann> worst case is, they remove the battery.
[17:29:39] <MrBIOS> no, worst case is they blow it up ;)
[17:29:56] <abaumann> ah. because it doesn't start up.. it's a bomb.. ;-)
[17:31:13] <MrBIOS> I can always put “for parts/repair”
[17:31:17] <MrBIOS> on the declaration
[17:31:31] <abaumann> yeah. that's a good idea.
[17:39:18] <MrBIOS> abaumann: I will include an OEM A/C adapter, which is autoranging, but has a two-blade, NEMA 1-15, american-style plug
[17:39:43] <abaumann> that's no problem, I should have adapters around.
[17:40:07] <abaumann> I believe, my eeepc 701 is also a US-version..
[17:40:17] <abaumann> * abaumann checks the power-plug on his eeepc
[17:40:19] <abaumann> yes. :-)

[22:02:49] <thePiGrepper> maybe I didnt understand the issue with firefox. it hasnt been able to build lately, right? or it was some dependency which had the issue?

[23:45:49] <bill-auger> interesting feature anyway - i have been hand-rolling such extension features for a while
[23:52:09] <bill-auger> im looking into rebasing the parabolaiso repo on arch32iso now - they were forked from arch in 2013 and have not seen upstream since - im assuming arch32iso is the best base as for the shared-concern of multi-arch support - and in time, probably ISO compatibility will be another
