[15:45:18] <NukeWithG> Hello all
[15:46:39] <deep42thought> Hi NukeWithG
[15:47:01] <NukeWithG> I have a T41 Thinkpad, the model with the Pentium model and I'm wondering if it would make sense to try and install the 32 bit version of Arch on it or whether I should look for a different Linux distro
[15:47:11] -!- oaken-source has joined #archlinux32
[15:48:49] <deep42thought> this should work
[15:49:02] <NukeWithG> Cool :)
[15:49:29] <deep42thought> you will need to install a slim desktop, though
[15:49:35] <deep42thought> e.g. no gnome or kde
[15:49:55] <NukeWithG> Okay, I'm not entirely sure what that means, sorry I'm a bit of a noob with everything that comes to Linux
[15:50:20] <deep42thought> archlinux (and thus also archlinux32) does not have a default desktop
[15:50:20] <NukeWithG> Do you mean like a less intensive GUI?
[15:50:25] <deep42thought> yes
[15:50:26] <deep42thought> exactly
[15:51:07] <NukeWithG> Ah yeah, makes sense. I'm planning on trying to figure out trying to use it just through CLI once I get the OS installed, I figure I'll learn best how to use Linux that way
[15:51:45] <deep42thought> that will definitely work
[15:52:15] <deep42thought> but on the other hand, a desktop does not prevent you from hacking into your system (and learning that way)
[15:53:24] <NukeWithG> Fair, but since I'll be trying to use the console for everything I can, I figure might as well not stress the laptop with trying to run the desktop, what with it not being a very fast one
[15:53:58] <deep42thought> ok, your decision
[15:54:06] <NukeWithG> Thank you for your help!
[15:54:13] <deep42thought> you're welcome

[16:27:07] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[16:27:07] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[16:27:08] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> but.. I'm also famous to break my own rules as soon as I see fit. :->
[16:27:29] <abaumann> text mode is also a GUI, just divided by 'g'..
[16:29:05] <abaumann> NukeWithG: tried it lately on a T42, had no issues.. ::-)
[16:29:32] <abaumann> T41 doesn't look awfully different to a T42..
[16:29:44] <NukeWithG> Yeah I think I just got it installed from a USB, looks like it is working fine
[16:30:32] <abaumann> graphical UI should work fine with the ATI open source way, I didn't try Catalyst (because I think, it's no longer supporting such old graphic cards)
[16:32:27] <abaumann> Sadly I don't have currently access to the machine, it's sitting in a server room serving as support laptop. :-)
[16:33:59] <abaumann> sorry.. have to leave..

[17:31:38] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[17:31:38] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[17:31:40] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> Welcome to the beatiful world of well-maintained Linux-software. :->
[17:32:38] <abaumann> elibrokeit: AlpineLinux gives me a hint: why do they add a small libssp-nonshared.a librrary implementing __stack_ck_fail_local? See https://git.alpinelinux.org .. This still doesn't explain, why pacman-static should link on 64-bit and not on 32-bit..
[17:32:40] <phrik> Title: APKBUILD\musl\main - aports - Main aports tree (at git.alpinelinux.org)
[17:33:49] -!- abaumann has quit [Client Quit]
[17:39:48] <elibrokeit> That's quite confusing and sounds like you need special flags to use it...
[17:40:13] <elibrokeit> Also isn't the .o file already available in libc.a ???

[20:26:25] <NukeWithG> Hey, I have a problem with Arch, I just realized that it didn't actually install the OS but is just running it off of the USB
[20:26:53] <NukeWithG> The installer says "Press [Tab] to edit options" but this doesn't open a new menu or anything so it confuses me
[20:27:34] <NukeWithG> Ohh I see no worries I found more instructions
[20:42:53] <deep42thought> arch is DIY os
