[07:29:00] <buildmaster> Hi deep42thought!
[07:29:00] <buildmaster> !rq deep42thought
[07:29:01] <phrik> buildmaster: <deep42thought> please don't go insane - I think I can't fix you like I can fix the buildmaster
[07:30:05] <deep42thought> slacka123: oh, uh, hmm - there are no instructions on pentium4 whatsoever. Hardest might be to switch from an i686 installation to a pentium4 installation. Easiest might be installing pentium4 from the i686 iso with some hand-editing in pacman.conf ("Architecture = pentium4")
[07:30:51] <deep42thought> I think, the best would be if you could open a thread on the forum about it and post any issues you encountered - whether or not you solved them
[07:31:26] <deep42thought> then others can benefit from your efforts and/or we can make a tutorial from it
[07:35:20] <deep42thought> elibrokeit: the issue is, I think, that "architecture" can mean different things - for one it names the bit-ines (32 vs. 64) and for the other it names features that the cpu might or might not have

[07:44:36] <buildmaster> Hi deep42thought!
[07:44:36] <buildmaster> !rq deep42thought
[07:44:36] <phrik> buildmaster: <deep42thought> ahm, what is actually in the package "vulkan-headers" on i486? I thought, we disabled all vulcans?
[07:56:15] <deep42thought> abaumann: I'd like to install the i486 branch onto my alix tomorrow - is there anything special I need to pay attention about it? Do you maybe have a bootstrap image I could use? (I have made bad experiences setting up bootloaders ...)
[07:58:10] <abaumann> The 486 ISO is quite old.. and there is no grub, just syslinux
[07:58:21] <abaumann> arch=i486 has to be forced in pacman.conf
[07:58:32] <abaumann> the alix reports uname i586
[07:58:38] <deep42thought> right
[07:58:48] <deep42thought> btw: good morning :-
[07:58:49] <deep42thought> )
[07:58:53] <abaumann> hi :-)
[08:01:27] <abaumann> mmh. my alix had trouble to boot from an USB stick.
[08:01:51] <abaumann> so I used the trick of installing the CompactFlash with pacstrap from another machine, setting arch=i486 there
[08:02:05] <deep42thought> I think, I had trouble booting from usb in the past, too
[08:02:17] <deep42thought> how do you install the bootloader then?
[08:02:18] <abaumann> https://bbs.archlinux32.org
[08:02:19] <phrik> Title: Install to Alix 2d2 i586 board? / Installation / Arch Linux 32 Forums (at bbs.archlinux32.org)
[08:02:46] <abaumann> The problem is, you have to have a compact flash writer
[08:02:53] <deep42thought> I do
[08:02:55] <deep42thought> :-)
[08:02:58] <abaumann> good
[08:03:08] <deep42thought> that's how I installed debian
[08:04:00] <deep42thought> flashed some strange debian derivate, inserted into the alix and then switched everything to vanilla debian :-D
[08:04:19] <deep42thought> ... because that was the only way I got the bootloader installed :-/
[08:07:34] <abaumann> MODULES=(pata_cs5536) for the ramdisk and I think I used the Archlinux syslinux install helper IIRC to make the compact flash bootable.
[08:07:53] <abaumann> I could severly f* up my own Alix and then try a reinstall. :-)
[08:08:09] <deep42thought> no need :-)
[08:08:34] <deep42thought> you could help me though, by sending the first few MB of your disk (partition table, mbr)
[08:09:07] <deep42thought> because then I can "install" the bootloader with dd :-)
[08:09:34] rcf is now known as quailpieologist
[08:10:30] quailpieologist is now known as rcf
[08:21:30] <abaumann> mmh. the alix is not up. can do this this evening..
[08:22:59] <deep42thought> no hurry - as I said, I want to look into it tomorrow
[08:23:28] <deep42thought> until then, my box at home is connected directly to the internet
[08:23:31] * deep42thought shivers
[08:57:05] <abaumann> my mirror and build slave is down. I have a broken network link somewhere..
[08:57:17] <deep42thought> not the alix, I hope
[08:57:38] <abaumann> nono.
[08:57:55] <abaumann> I have one alix as openbsd router, this one is fine. and the other is in a separate test network..
[08:58:20] <deep42thought> ah, a true network geek - with a separate test network at home ;-)
[09:01:31] <abaumann> yep. since I got hacked on my network, I decided it might be a smart idea not to expose unauthenticated VNC ports to the wild ;-)
[09:01:41] <deep42thought> :-D
[09:01:45] <deep42thought> a wise thought
