[13:54:09] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[13:54:10] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[13:54:10] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> people tend to rewrite things in new hip languages, just because they are too lazy to read old code
[14:05:04] -!- deep42thought has joined #archlinux32
[14:05:04] <buildmaster> Hi deep42thought!
[14:05:04] <buildmaster> !rq deep42thought
[14:05:05] <phrik> buildmaster: <deep42thought> golang-asvnp-acwduac-sefc-evfsx-vb4fs-sefvcy is broken (says me)
[14:05:08] <deep42thought> Hi abaumann!
[14:05:12] <abaumann> hi deep42thought
[14:05:58] <deep42thought> How do I find out, from which of my hard drives this annoying beeping originates? ;-)
[14:06:25] <deep42thought> (not really related to arch32, but it *is* my arch32 machine, which shows this issue)
[14:06:37] -!- KeiraT has quit [Quit: KeiraT]
[14:06:39] <abaumann> mmh. hardware-raid?
[14:06:46] <deep42thought> no
[14:06:50] <deep42thought> just a bunch of disks
[14:06:53] <deep42thought> no raid involved
[14:07:19] <abaumann> hard disk normally don't beep, do they?
[14:07:29] <deep42thought> they shouldn't
[14:07:32] <abaumann> it's not that if they had a piezo mounted on them. ;-)
[14:07:45] <deep42thought> at least, it's not necessary for normal operation
[14:07:51] <deep42thought> they *do* have piezzos, iirc
[14:07:51] <abaumann> true, true
[14:07:57] <abaumann> ah?
[14:08:04] <deep42thought> for fine-positioning the heads
[14:08:43] <abaumann> a beeping drive sounds like dying mechanics to me
[14:09:04] <abaumann> some click. (the famous click-of-death)
[14:10:03] <abaumann> you could shut it down and them detach all hard disks, attach them one by one and find the beeping one
[14:10:09] <abaumann> it's a software raid or so?
[14:10:24] <abaumann> you just have to make sure the kernel does something funny to it.
[14:10:25] <deep42thought> multiple mounts, containing virtual volumes for bareos backup
[14:10:32] <abaumann> ah.
[14:10:34] <deep42thought> no raid at all
[14:10:39] <deep42thought> not even a software raid
[14:10:42] <abaumann> so, that would be an easy case then.
[14:11:05] <abaumann> they are not hot-swappable, I suppose?
[14:11:15] <deep42thought> I believe, they aren't
[14:11:22] <abaumann> better don't try :-)
[14:12:46] <abaumann> smart data?
[14:12:49] <abaumann> hdparm?
[14:13:04] <abaumann> maybe you can "see" it beeping this way.
[14:13:37] <deep42thought> I see one vanished disk
[14:13:50] <deep42thought> and the backup is currently only writing to a single disk
[14:14:34] <deep42thought> the vanished disk fills dmesg with connection errors or whatnot
[14:14:51] <deep42thought> [526854.522241] ata8: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[14:14:51] <deep42thought> [526854.522250] ata8.00: link online but device misclassified
[14:14:51] <deep42thought> [526854.522253] ata8: link online but 1 devices misclassified, retrying
[14:14:51] <deep42thought> [526854.522258] ata8: reset failed (errno=-11), retrying in 35 secs
[14:15:25] <abaumann> hdparm might give you the serial of the disk
[14:15:35] <deep42thought> not of the vanished one
[14:15:42] <abaumann> but of all others..
[14:15:46] <deep42thought> this one is not visible under /dev/sd... anymore
[14:15:49] <deep42thought> yeah
[14:15:51] <abaumann> decuction by exclusion, Holmes.. ;-)
[14:15:55] <deep42thought> I saved that list already :-)
[14:18:30] <abaumann> got bitten by the "libxcrypt" bug :-)
[14:18:42] <abaumann> a funny machine I forgot about had a broken sshd
[14:20:52] <deep42thought> damn, it's a Heisenbug - I opened the case and the beeping ends :-/
[14:21:35] <abaumann> it's like when I moved the last old machine in a rack.. 1 meter upwards, and the RAID-controller completely died on me.
[14:21:55] <deep42thought> ah, the missing drive came back
[14:22:06] <deep42thought> probably some loose cable
[14:22:18] <abaumann> but beeping on loose cable?
[14:22:20] <abaumann> strange..
[14:22:28] <deep42thought> but I can't keep the case open with a baby crawling around
[14:22:39] <abaumann> aeh.. :-)
[14:22:49] <deep42thought> she already put a (powered) power cable into her mouth :-/
[14:22:55] <abaumann> early electronics education. ;-)
[14:23:05] <abaumann> ai.
[14:59:20] <T`aZ> unmount all other drives, hdparm -Y (iirc) to spin down all the disks, thud making no noise anymore, then use your ears ? :p
[14:59:33] <T`aZ> s/thud/thus/
[15:04:44] -!- KeiraT has joined #archlinux32
[15:10:32] <deep42thought> ok, summary (of what I believe, happened): the loose cable makes the drive reconnect every few seconds and this lets it make some beep noise, because it's obviously not properly spinning down in between.
[15:10:47] <deep42thought> thanks for all the suggestions, I'll keep them in mind, when the beeping reappears :-)
