[09:41:40] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[09:41:40] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[09:41:41] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> ..they should have much better self-driving cars now, given the amount of training material I provided. ;-)
[09:41:52] <abaumann> KillerWasp: just don't try to print those bugs on a real printer :->
[09:46:08] <abaumann> Get especially suspicious if a new printer appears in you network like "HP Super New Printer".. ;-)
[09:46:26] <abaumann> OTOH: who is still printing in 2024?!
[09:46:50] <abaumann> (I had my personal fun with CUPS today, so forgive my snarkiness)

[16:32:28] <girls> haha, my laziness finally paied off: I'm not running cups for ages, because I didn't get arount to setting it up and am instead just using the web interface of my printer :D

[17:07:57] <gehidore> the part it seems nobody is talking about with this whole thing is it's only actually an issue if you're ignorant enough to have all the ports open WAN side and are silly enough not to run a firewall on all the things
[17:11:22] <girls> yeah, that, too
[17:22:16] <gehidore> don't get me wrong, it's still an issue that shouldn't be there
[17:22:32] <gehidore> and if the release of information about it is truthful it's interesting to see the lack of interest in resolving said problems
[17:22:42] <gehidore> from the parties involved with cups
[17:26:37] <girls> yeah, but from the prelude I expected a spectre-like kernel bug or something

[17:28:53] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[17:28:53] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[17:28:54] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> Linux - the new Windows
[17:30:13] <abaumann> gehidore: you would expect that, but if a public scan for port 631 UDP shows up 200/300K devices, then apparently there is a percentage of not so smart people.. :->
[17:30:24] <abaumann> the blog on https://www.evilsocket.net is worth reading BTW
[17:30:26] <phrik> Title: Attacking UNIX Systems via CUPS, Part I (at www.evilsocket.net)
[17:32:23] <abaumann> Arch btw does the smart thing and has cups-browsed as optional dependency when you install cups
[17:32:34] <abaumann> https://wiki.archlinux.org in 6.5: "Warning: cups-browsed is vulnerable and the entry point to execute arbitrary code on a system as the lp user when a print job is sent to it.
[17:32:35] <phrik> Title: CUPS - ArchWiki (at wiki.archlinux.org)
[17:32:38] <abaumann> "
[17:32:50] <abaumann> 4 S root 125430 1 3 80 0 - 87795 - 19:32 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/cups-browsed
[17:32:53] <abaumann> mmh. well.
[17:33:47] <abaumann> Fun fact: since years I have a foomatic HP printer on cups on my ARMv6 Archlinux. I copy files there by hand and then log in via ssh and use a local printer.
[17:34:11] <abaumann> I know, this is not a solution for big companies, but yeah, I'm and was rather secure this way. :-)
[17:35:29] <abaumann> I would love to see as survey, how many distros install cups-browsed by default, have browsed as part of a common cups package and which ones enable and start it by default.
[17:35:53] <girls> I used something similar: besides the ssh part: I have a inotifywait running there, which prints everything, I dump there
[17:36:03] <abaumann> ah, neat :-)
[17:36:17] <girls> afk
[17:36:24] <abaumann> cu :-)
