[20:17:50] <marc2377> Is it straightforward to install Arch Linux 32 to an external hard drive (the one from my old laptop) by connecting it to my Arch Linux (x86_64) machine?
[20:29:57] <gehidore> you should be able to do that
[20:41:26] <KillerWasp> marc2377: you mean install by remote machine to lan?
[20:42:14] <marc2377> No, I actually took the hard drive from the laptop and connected it to my main computer. Created a partition and a filesystem on it, and it's now mounted to /mnt/temp
[20:43:19] <marc2377> I guess I should use pacstrap/pacman to install the base packages to that mounted partition, specifying the architecture from a pacman.conf and a makepkg.conf as pentium4, and using a custom mirrorlist that I got from Arch Linux 32. Is that it?
[20:43:44] <gehidore> ^
[20:44:19] <KillerWasp> marc2377: yes, you can. from arch 64 you need download the iso of arch 32, save and run it from the pendrive.
[20:44:50] <gehidore> KillerWasp that's not what was asked
[20:45:07] <gehidore> but that *would* be one way to do it
[20:46:06] <marc2377> Yeah I don't have a pendrive at hand (could get one on Monday). Still, the Arch32 boot image always installs for the i686 architecture, doesn't it?
[20:46:09] <KillerWasp> gehidore: sorry, but i understand that you can't use pacstrap from arch 64 for arch 32, you need a image like a iso or a copy of your filesystem from vm.
[20:46:50] <KillerWasp> at least i never can do it in all the times that i try..
[20:47:39] <gehidore> when did you stop being able to do it? now Im' curious to try cause it used to work, admittedly it's been at least 5 years since I tried
[20:48:17] <marc2377> The process should be akin to installing packages to a 32-bit chroot (which I've done once... in 2019
[20:48:23] <marc2377> Gonna read some documentation
[20:50:39] <marc2377> Ok, found that pacstrap (and also arch-chroot) are part of arch-install-scripts, a package that has "arch=('any')" and so it's the same for Arch main and Arch 32
[20:50:46] <marc2377> That's something
[20:53:08] <marc2377> This page, which I landed at by mistake, is returning an error: https://www.archlinux32.org - where do I report it?
[20:54:08] <marc2377> Actually, all i486 package's pages
[21:23:16] <marc2377> In you guys' opinion, is ext4 with its default options a good choice for an old, kinda slow laptop hard drive (from 2006), 40 GB partition... for a 32-bit only, single core processor? (Celeron M 380)
[21:52:48] <socksins1> i have used ext4 without problems on way worse hardware :)
[21:53:07] <socksins1> you should be fine
[21:55:35] <gehidore> Be aware, especially on older hardware, ext4 will allow significant corruption without throwing errors if you're having things like bitflips due to geriatric RAM
[22:19:42] <T`aZ> if your ram is bad, everything is fucked anyway, cant blame it on any fs
[23:03:15] <marc2377> geriatric 🤣🤣
[23:03:18] <marc2377> Thanks!
[23:03:51] <marc2377> I _could_ disable journaling but won't be doing it
[23:11:41] -!- drathir_tor has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[23:14:27] <T`aZ> no, dont disable journaling. if you think your ram is bad, run memtest, confirm it, throw it away and buy another set on ebay. if you cant thorow it away, still run mem test, hope for the best that it's only a small area that is fucked. disabled that area in the linux cmd boot args so linux wont use it.
[23:16:01] <marc2377> Good advice
